When you find a topic of interest, think about how those research findings could be applied to a real-world situation in the UAE. Having identified an interesting paper, you should write up a ‘summary, critique, and application’. Throughout the paper, your goal is to explain how the main research issue and findings could help a UAE-based business to make better decisions or create a stronger strategy. Specifically: Article: Find a relatively recent (less than 5 years old) empirical research paper on any aspect of consumer behavior/psychology that you find interesting — if you are unsure about whether the paper you would like to use is suitable, run it by your professor. To get you started, you can search Google Scholar via the ZU library access search page (https://scholar-google-com.zulib.idm.oclc.org/?hl=en). Summary & Critique: Having reviewed the paper, write a brief (estimate 250 words) summary of the main research issue/purpose reflected in this paper. After - go ‘beyond’ the abstract description – explain the purpose of this research and your view about why this research is important. A good research paper critique is an analysis that goes beyond just summarizing the main points. It's a critical assessment that evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the research itself. You'll consider the overall contribution value of the research. Does it advance knowledge in the field? Does it have practical implications? In short, a research paper critique is a thoughtful examination that helps us understand the quality and relevance of the research. Follow-up study: Based on your critique, formulate a follow-up hypothesis relevant to the UAE market; i.e., relevant to ‘us’ – all or a specific group living here. Then, propose a related research exercise that could test that hypothesis and provide relevant results that shed light on the issue. Imagine the nature of information you would create, and how that information can aid decision-making. The research initiative proposal should be approximately 500-750 words, and clearly indicate: Your ‘hypothesis’ – the main research issue/question you are addressing, Proposed methodology – the way you will collect information and measure results, and Expected results – a description of what you would expect to find and what it means. Remember, when it comes to research design, basic does not mean bad. Being able to test an important idea with a ‘simple’ design can be ideal. Strategy: Finally, as an objective of the paper, be sure to explain how the research question(s) could help a particular UAE organization (e.g., business or government) make better decisions or create a stronger strategy. You shoudl wrap up your submission with a short conclusion and recommendations. This final part should have up to 250 words. As business majors, effective communication skills are essential — we want you to express ideas well and expect that your work is clear, concise, and not only proofread but also developed through multiple drafts. Remember, ideally you should be able to suport your findings with other academic sources cited in APA format. In upper-level classes, we want you to focus on the LOs because they are the core components of the class. Building your paper around the context of LOs is a much better approach than writing a paper and then inserting LO footnotes. You may tag LOs with a footnote to make it clear to you and the Professor where you are trying to highlight certain concepts, but do not explain your application in a footnote.
