Description Philanthropy plays a major role in addressing conservation, climate, and humanitarian issues and improving our world. For this project, you will be acting as an advisor to a donor willing to pledge $10 Million towards conservation efforts but who does not have the time to investigate how their donations will be best spent. The donor would like to split their donation among at least five organizations and give at least $1 Million to each organization. Your project has the following components: 1) Investigate how other advising organizations determine how to select the best non-profits. Do they look for low overhead, big potential impact, transformative projects, efficiency in spending? Write a section detailing the philosophy of these organizations, how they determine what causes to support, how they choose specific organizations to support, and the role they play in philanthropy. [250-350 words]. Two organizations you should investigate are Founder's Pledge (https://www.founderspledge.com) and GiveWell (https://www.givewell.org). 2) You need to select a specific area to target for Section 2; this could be based on a: A) a group of wildlife (e.g. bird conservation, conservation of wild cats, supporting insect populations, etc), B) a specific region of the world (e.g. the tropics, the Arctic circle, Europe, etc.), C) a specific habitat (e.g. forests, coastal areas, marine, savannas, etc.), or some combination (e.g. tropical forest birds). There are many organizations that aim to help conservation efforts. Foci include: climate change, land preservation, habitat connectivity, community development, sustainable agriculture, hunter education, sustainable fisheries, etc. Do some research on the factors that have the biggest negative effect on wildlife populations. Identify at least five sectors within the conservation field that you think the donor should support. Come up with some method of quantifying which sectors are most important or could make the biggest impact to conservation. [300-450 words; generate at least one figure; cite at least 3 peer-reviewed, scientific articles for this section; Note: section 2 is not the place to identify particular organizations, but a place to identify more general issues/sectors.] 3) Identify at least five non-profit organizations that you recommend receive funding from the donor and split the $10 Million donation among them (these 5 NGOs should be linked to the 5 sectors you identified in part 2). For each organization that you select, identify which conservation issue they address and detail why the organization was selected. Also, for each organization you select, identify two organizations with a similar mission that you chose not to recommend for funding and briefly explain why they were not recommended for funding.
