Description Case Overview in Brief This case describes Salesforce’s development of Sustainability Cloud, a suite of software tools built to help companies measure, track, and report carbon emissions and other sustainability metrics. The goal of this case is to provide a background and foundational knowledge of three topics: (1) software as a service (SaaS); (2) environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards; and (3) carbon accounting. This case places you in the role of the fictional Salesforce Vice President of Sustainability, who is deciding whether or not to recommend the development and launch of Sustainability Cloud 2.0. She is pondering many issues. Since Salesforce was able to become a world leader in SaaS software, could it become a leader in sustainability software, as well? After analyzing the decision at hand as described in the provided case study (attached below - note this document is ~20 pages), you should be ready to meet with Salesforce executives and make a recommendation via PowerPoint presentation regarding next steps for the company’s sustainability software products After reading and assessing the material, students should: Describe Salesforce’s Sustainability Cloud. Examine and understand environmental, social, and governance (ESG) market trends. Analyze the carbon reporting process and challenges. Evaluate Salesforce’s strategic options. Formulate a recommendation with rationale for whether or not Salesforce should move forward with developing and launching Sustainability Cloud 2.0. Assignment Requirements Develop your recommendation via a presentation that you will upload to D2L as a PDF (Note: you will not present this deck, the slides should stand alone / speak for themselves). In this presentation deck (use the platform of your choosing, e.g., PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides, Keynote, etc.), at a minimum you should answer the following questions, keep in mind your intended audience is C-Suite Salesforce executives. In your presentation, be sure to summarize a brief overview of the request at hand and respond to the below 5 questions (you may choose the order to include in your presentation). Is Sustainability Cloud enabling greenwashing? Why or why not? Will having access to carbon accounting tools encourage adoption from existing clients that are looking to become more sustainable? Why or why not? What would you recommend Riley Gomez do in terms of releasing Sustainability Cloud 2.0? (be specific) How might Sustainability Cloud change the role of businesses in driving sustainability?
