Description As we discussed how and why policy is created as well as some specific environmental policies last week, for our discussion this week we will be focusing on policy. Please select an environmental problem that is of interest to you (pollution, climate change, energy use, agricultural policy, etc.). What role does policy play in addressing this problem? In your discussion please explain which problem you picked and why as well as what types of policies could be used to solve this problem. You may mention current environmental policies and what you think works and what you think doesn't, but you also must include what you think we need to be doing about the problem. If the current policies were solving the problems, they wouldn't be problems anymore so you are in charge of thinking up new solutions. Since we will also discuss economics, feel free to explain how you think the policy should be funded or include economic policies as part of your solution. You must also respond to two classmates explaining why you agree with their proposed policy solutions or proposing alternative solutions that could work. Just putting you agree or disagree will not earn you full credit. You must also explain why and you should be respectful in your discourse. your responses to classmates should be at least 2 complete sentences, although more is better. I promised to model the first two discussion posts so here is my example: Climate change is a huge global issue that threatens every aspect of our lives. The most recent UN IPCC report stated we have until 2030 to make dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions if we want to forestall the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. (Don't worry if you don't know this yet. We'll be talking about all this fun stuff next week!) As this is an international problem we need policy at every level to address this crisis. Internationally, the Paris agreement of 2015 is a step in the right direction. The U.S., the second largest greenhouse gas emitter and one of the highest per capita emitters of greenhouse gas, withdrew from the agreement. We need to re-engage with the international effort to reduce greenhouse gases and have national policy that supports this goal. One important national policy we should be working on involves energy use. We need to transition away from fossil fuel use, which is responsible for a huge portion of our greenhouse gas emissions, and build infrastructure to support renewable energy. We should also have education policy that incorporates environmental and sustainability education beginning in elementary schools and continuing through college (I'm not biased ;) ) State and local governments should also be developing policies that address energy and land use to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. These policies are necessary steps to help us address the climate crisis.
