Understanding the dynamics of unhealthy and healthy relationships can empower us to make informed choices about our personal lives. Reflecting on these dynamics can deepen your understanding of how power and control can manifest in various forms. Consider your own insights from class discussions, readings, and societal observations as you engage with the following activity. In Chapter 7: Dating and Mate Selection, the section Rules of Dating and Mate Selectionincludes Rule #5: “Look for Warning Signs of Deeper Problems.” This rule highlights risky, dangerous, or unhealthy traits that may appear in potential partners. You’ve probably heard the saying “love is blind”—sometimes, people in love may overlook or excuse red flags that signal controlling or abusive behavior. Before responding to the prompt, watch the short video below about red flags of abuse. Then respond to the questions below. Video: 10 Red Flags of Abuse Discussion Questions 1. Power and Control: Domestic violence in about obtaining power and control in a relationship, and can involve emotional, financial, or social tactics–not just physically harm.
