Childhood is characterized by the pursuit of understanding in many areas such as personal relations ...

Childhood is characterized by the pursuit of understanding in many areas such as personal relations and experiences with their physical world. Through this exploration, children generally develop skills. One of the big debates in the field is whether the media can facilitate this learning process. This debate is especially important now, when many children are engaging with more media than ever before and many students are learning in online classrooms. The central questions of this assignment are: 1) Does media advance and/or hinder the development of children's skills? and 2) How can we advance the further development of these skills? A short summary of how to complete this assignment Choose one specific type of skill (i.e., physical, cognitive, socioemotional). Write a 2 - 3 page paper that Explains your position about whether you think TV and social media advance or hinder the development of the skill you chose. Identifies 2 key pieces of what is missing from TV and social media that, if present, would help advance the development of the skill you chose. Describes an intervention that would improve the competency level of children for the skill you’ve chosen. Upload a digital copy of a Word Document to the Canvas assignment by the due date. Look over your TurnItIn Similarity Report. What should your submission include? Each paper should be between 2 full pages and 3 full pages in length (double-spaced), excluding the title page and references. Do not include an introduction beyond the description of the skill in the bullet point below. Spend 1 short paragraph (3 - 4 sentences) introducing the basics of the skill you have chosen to highlight (i.e., physical, cognitive, socioemotional). Bring in course material to support your description. Spend the remainder of the first page explaining whether you think TV and social media advance or hinder the development of children’s skills for the skill you have chosen. Explain your position using course materials. You may also bring in an outside scholarly source. Identify 2 key pieces of what is missing from TV or social media that, if present, would help advance the development of the skill you chose. For one of the key pieces, briefly describe why it should be added to TV or social media (about 2 - 3 sentences). It should be clear how adding this feature will advance the development of the skill you chose. For the other key piece, you’ll go into more detail. Briefly describe (as with the first key piece) why it should be added to TV or social media. Then, describe how this might happen. Essentially, you will describe an intervention (something that will be added) that would improve the competency level of children for the skill you’ve chosen. You can either imagine a new program OR identify a past or current program (with proper citation). How will the intervention you propose increase the function of TV or social media in skill development? Use course materials or outside sources to support your arguments in this section. Provide a short conclusion (1 paragraph) that ties together your paper. Grading Up to 2 of the 25 points can be earned based on your inclusion of scholarly citations and integrating them into your analysis of the media source. You must include at least one reference for our course materials (e.g., textbook, lecture, micro-lectures). You may also bring in additional scholarly sources to support your arguments. For this assignment, scholarly sources are considered journal articles or books in psychology, sociology, and other related academic fields. The scholarly source should report research findings; it should not be an opinion piece. Magazine and newspaper articles are not considered scholarly sources. Do not use websites or textbooks (other than the text for this course) for these sources. Check out our Quick Guide to APA for information about Scholarly Sources and finding them! Our textbook is also loaded with references; use those leads and then read the primary sources. You need to bring in at least 1 source to support your arguments. What is a scholarly source? The remainder of the points (i.e., 23 points) will be determined by the quality of your paper following the bullet points above. If your paper is incomprehensible due to grammar or spelling, you will lose points for any idea that we cannot interpret. In short, be clear for credit! The page “requirement” is a guideline. You will not be directly penalized for submitting a paper that is less than 2 full pages or greater than 3 full pages; however, if your paper is less than 2 full pages, you have likely not addressed the prompt with sufficient detail to receive full credit.
