Background Follow the Assessment (FBA) process in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Once data is collected from both indirect and direct assessments, it must be carefully analyzed to understand the behavior and its underlying causes. This analysis involves the following: Data Analysis: Reviewing observational data, interviews, and rating scales to identify patterns and trends in the behavior. Key aspects to examine include the frequency, intensity, and duration of the behavior, as well as any contextual factors such as specific times of day, activities, or interactions with others. Analyzing this data helps to pinpoint consistent antecedents (events that occur before the behavior) and consequences (events that follow the behavior). Formulating Hypotheses: Based on the data analysis, develop hypotheses about the function of the behavior. These hypotheses should address why the behavior is occurring and what it aims to achieve. Common functions include: Attention: The behavior might be a way for the individual to gain attention from others. Escape: The behavior might serve as a means to avoid or escape from an undesirable situation or task. Access: The behavior might be used to obtain a desired object, activity, or privilege. Self-Stimulation: The behavior might be performed for sensory stimulation or pleasure. Hypothesis Summary: Create a summary of the hypotheses that outlines the function of the behavior based on the analyzed data. This summary should include: A description of the behavior and its key features. The identified antecedents and consequences that are linked to the behavior. The proposed function of the behavior and how it meets the individual’s needs or goals. Instructions Based on the information provided in previous assessments (background information, FAST & MAS assessments, parent/teacher interview, data collection, identify the function of targeted behavior, identify antecedents and consequences, and develop a hypothesis statement.
