A well-executed assignment must meet some minimal standards. First, and preferably in the introduction, your paper should offer a (small) contribution in regard to the topic that the assigned readings cover. This means that your paper should have an original argument or point that can be supported by evidence found in the readings. Second, your paper should contain a review of the assigned readings (i.e., the major ideas and arguments, how they interact with each other, and why exactly they are important in relation to your argument or point). Third, if your argument requires further elaboration, you should use empirical evidence to support it. This can be found in the assigned readings themselves or in outside sources (journal articles, books, statistical data, press interviews, etc.). Fourth, given the space limitations (4 pages), presentation is absolutely essential. This applies to grammar and spelling as well as the scholarly apparatus of your paper (i.e., bibliography, footnotes, page numbers, section headings, if necessary). Lastly, creative writing and original thinking is a major bonus: nothing beats having good ideas and communicating them effectively. These essays will ask you to select one article out of several that will be uploaded on ecampus and provide a 2-3 page review of its major ideas. The article I chose is available in the drop box. I believe the simplest thing to do would be to summarize the main points of the article and then discuss the challenges that modern states face in maintaining their power and authority, particularly in the face of internal and external threats..
